How the Pockets Have Changed
The other day, I heard “Pocketful of Rainbows” by Elvis Presley. It’s a s+++++++++++++++weet song from 1960. It brought a smirk to my lips, thinking about how things have changed. In 1991, the Spin Doctors released an album called Pocketful of Kryptonite. (You can listen to the entire album here.) The first song is called “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues,” but I’ve always thought of it as “Pocketful of Kryptonite” because of the chorus. Here is them performing the song live on the David Letterman show in 1992.
The lyrics of “Pocketful of Rainbows” starts:
I don’t worryWhenever skies are gray aboveGot a pocketful of rainbowsGot a heart full of love
Mister HeartacheI’ve found a way to make him leaveGot a pocketful of rainbowsGot a star up in my sleeve
Ah, isn’t that sweet?
Then, after thirty years, the Spin Doctors were influenced by life and wrote this:

Wow, how the pockets have changed, right?
I mean, don’t get me wrong, change is good, but what I’m referring to is our culture’s mindset change. I could go on and on, but I won’t. This is a deep conversation, best had with like-minded folks over a glass of wine or cheesecake.
I just wrote this blog post to share an interesting comparison. I thought I’d mix it up. 🙂
