Stress Be Gone!

I worked in a Wicks ‘n’ Sticks candle shop (I don’t know if they are open anymore.) and loved the smells in it.  There was this one scent I was gaga over and I never knew exactly what candle it came from. I bought several candle votives and tried them and while they were very nice smelling, it wasn’t the one that made me feel so calm and relaxed.

Finally, I found it and learned it was a patchouli scent. Oh my, it smelled amazing!  The store closed and I wasn’t able to find another candle that smelled like that.

Then I discovered patchouli essential oil and each time I smell it, I feel instantly calm.  According to Healthline.com, “Musky patchouli is used in ayurvedic medicine to address a variety of conditions, including stress and anxiety. It’s made from the leaves and stems of the patchouli plant, which is a type of herb.

Patchouli can be used on its own but is often combined with other essential oils such as lavender. It’s thought to promote calmness and relaxation, though most evidence is anecdotal.

A 2020 study assessed the effects of inhaled patchouli oil on emergency room nurses. Compared to the control group, nurses who inhaled the patchouli oil reported lower levels of stress and higher levels of compassion.

  • How to use: To relieve anxiety, inhale patchouli oil directly or add it diluted to a warm bath or room diffuser.
  • Best used for: Patchouli can be used to help with depression. It may also have anti-inflammatory properties, help ease pain, and help to promote skin health.

There are some people who love the scent and others who hate it. I personally love it but don’t wear it on me. I have a patchouli oil roller bottle and rub it on the outside of a cotton sachet filled with lavender dried flowers. Oh my, it does the trick to help relax me! It’s not overpowering, as patchouli can be. I keep it in my desk drawer and each time I open it, I get a whiff of the calming scent.

So if you’re looking for a natural stress buster, look no further (or smell no further -haha) than patchouli!
